    The cTrader VWAP Oscillator compares price movements against the volume-weighted average price to show when a market is stretched away from its recent fair value. It's beneficial for short-term traders looking to spot when price may be extended—either too high or too low—relative to where most trading volume has occurred. This can help traders time entries or exits more effectively, especially during fast-moving sessions. This divergence can signal momentum shifts, assisting active traders to pinpoint moments of exhaustion or strength, particularly within intraday timeframes where precision is most crucial.

    VWAP Calculation:
    VWAP is calculated by summing the product of price and volume, and then dividing it by the total volume over a specified period.

    Formula:
    VWAP = (Σ (Price × Volume)) / (Σ Volume)

    Oscillator Output:
    Computes the difference between the current price (or a moving average) and the VWAP. Often displayed as a line or histogram around zero.

    Trading Signal Interpretation:

    • Positive Values: Price is above VWAP — bullish bias.
    • Negative Values: Price is below VWAP — bearish bias.

    • Crossing Zero: Potential entry or exit signals depending on direction.

    Use Cases:
    Ideal for intraday traders to identify overbought or oversold conditions relative to VWAP.

    History of the VWAP Indicator

    VWAP, or Volume-Weighted Average Price, came into use during the 1980s, primarily to support institutional traders managing large orders. It wasn’t patented or tied to a single creator; instead, it emerged as a practical tool developed by trading desks at big firms like Goldman Sachs and Salomon Brothers. The goal was simple: find a price that reflects real trading activity by factoring in both volume and price throughout the day. This gave traders a clearer benchmark than just looking at an average of prices. Over time, VWAP caught on and is now widely used not just for execution, but also for analysis and strategy.
